As the first session of The Matriarchy draws to an end this week, I’ve been reflecting on the quiet magic that has happened in those classes over the last three months. Our bodies carry our histories of movement. These histories accompany us to whatever we are doing with our bodies in the present day, from our daily tasks to our exercise practices. And the more aware we are of our embodied history, the more we can put that knowledge to use to feel and move better. As a parent I think a lot about what I might be able to do to help my kids skip the extended punitive phase I went through, when movement and food were all about the “shoulds”. I know a lot of it is out of my control. But I also know that the relationship I have with my body and with movement is going to teach them a lot, whether I want it to or not. So I’m going to do my darnedest to make the ways I live in my body lessons I want them to learn.
